Jerome Reinstein, PhD
Dr Jerome Reinstein is founder and principal of Reinstein associates and Immediate Past Director-General of the World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI). He is also co-chair of the Medicines Labelling Group, an informal NGO working with companies and medicines agencies to improve the usability of medicines labels.
American born and educated, he brings a profound knowledge of the OTC and toiletries industries, having worked for more than 25 years in Europe - until 1990 in increasing R & D management responsibilities with Richardson-Vicks and Procter & Gamble. These included product development, regulatory affairs, safety, efficacy and technical external relations for all OTC medicines, food supplements and toiletries developed and marketed in Europe and Africa.
Dr Reinstein is considered an expert in self-medication around the world. He is well known at the trade and professional associations, both at the national and EU level as well as all over the world in his previous role as Director-General of WSMI. He has served on the Association of the European Self-Medication Industry's (AESGP) Regulatory Affairs Committee, the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Cosmetic Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA) and the Council of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists. Dr Reinstein was a member of the Editorial Board of the International Pharmacy Journal and the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and was a Member-at-Large of the USP Convention. He is a member of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and participates in a number of FIP working groups. In his capacity as WSMI Director-General, he participated actively in many WHO Committees and Working Groups.
He has frequently been invited to lecture to scientific and industry groups on various aspects of the OTC field as well as product development and testing issues facing the industry and has published widely in this area.
Prior to coming to Europe, Dr Reinstein was Director of Pharmaceutical Development for Syntex International in Mexico City. His experience before that was a mixture of academic and industrial teaching and research. He taught pharmaceutics at the University of California in San Francisco, the National University of Mexico and the University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, the latter as a Fulbright visiting professor. Earlier in his career, he also worked in pharmaceutical research at Pfizer Inc. in New York City, and as Postdoctoral Fellow of the US National Institutes of Health at Northwestern University.
Dr Reinstein received his undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from Columbia University in New York and his MSc and PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Wisconsin. He has authored more than 100 publications and symposium presentations of a variety of subjects in the OTC Medicines and toiletries field. He holds honorary memberships in several professional societies and the Pan American Pharmaceutical and Biochemical Federation honored him with the Dr ER Squibb Award. In May 2002, he was honored with the Ivan D Combe Distinguished Service Award, recognizing outstanding achievements that advance self-care and public health. He speaks fluent French and Spanish, in addition to his native English.
